Course prepares graduates to teach in a key stage 1/ key stage 2 setting (5-11 years); course reflects the newly revised primary curriculum; school experience constitutes a major element of the course and is structured as a linear progression; this enables participants to consider the ways in which schools operate, the management of learning, the development of teaching and assessment strategies, and the role of the class teacher.

Degree at 2.1 or equivalent in a subject area that has some relevance to early years/primary school teaching, but it does not need to be in a national curriculum area; experience of working in schools prior to application (at least 50 per cent of the required) minimum of 4 weeks recent experience (ideally more), in a primary classroom (Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2); applicants must demonstrate that they are familiar with the context that they intend to work in and provide evidence of some understanding of the teaching profession; experience of working with children (non-school-based context); previous experience of working with children in a non-school-based context, work or life experiences that have helped you to develop a good understanding of the needs of young children and how they learn, or other professional/vocational qualifications is considered; at least 5 subjects including English language, mathematics and science are required; all applicants are required to attend an interview in person either at the Falmer campus or at 1 of the partner schools; all offers of places are subject to a satisfactory health check and a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced disclosure check; for non-native speakers of English: 6.5 overall and 6.0 in writing.
