Course Description
This module provides a detailed view of the history and cultural achievement of Ancient Egypt during the Old Kingdom in order to understand why Pharaonic civilisation was so successful and enduring. This includes a study of Pre-Dynastic cultures leading to the initial unification under one ruler in about 3000 BC.The establishment of stable government during Dynasties 1 and 2 enabled the Pharaohs of the Old Kingdom to preside over a vigorous and innovative society which developed long-lasting social and religious concepts. The influence of the natural environment and the historical context of religious and political concepts, as well as artistic forms, will be discussed.
