Course Description
This Research Theme concentrates on new energy and environmental technologies that will shape the future fuel efficiency and environmental impact of our modern society. Research programmes are multidisciplinary, encompassing chemical engineering, chemistry and geology. Specific areas of current research include: carbon technology (hydrogen storage on carbons, carbon composites, active carbons and co-processing coal and plastic waste); industrial geochemistry (climatic reconstruction from coal seams, trace element distributions in coal seams, determination of biomarkers by hydropyrolysis of petroleum); fuel characterisation (stable isotope measurements for source apportioning of pollutants, automated image analysis of coals and chars for coal combustion); cleaner coal technology (preparation of ultra clean coal for power generation, NOx reduction, supercritical water-mediated removal of carbon from fly ash, CO2 capture from power stations, coal bed methane production linked to CO2 sequestration); bio-energy technologies (biomass fuels, bio-refining).
