Course Description
Painting is a dynamic discipline within the field of fine art, which plays a central role in contemporary art practice. On this pathway, you will have the opportunity to develop the skills and understanding required to realise your ambitions as a creative practitioner. With a focus on studio-based study, you will explore traditional techniques, current methods and interdisciplinary approaches, underpinned by contextual understanding. You will be encouraged to develop a critical awareness of fine art practice. Professional artists will share their experiences with you through tutorials, lectures and seminars and study visits within a stimulating, research-led learning environment. This pathway will help you to develop practical knowledge and transferable skills, which are vital to a successful career as an artist in the creative industries or for further research at PhD level. Core focus areas include: Research methods; Processes and techniques; Installation of works; Exhibiting; Setting up a professional studio; Visual and verbal presentations; Writing applications.

Course Fees
Fees for 2007/08: £3,240 (subject to increase for 08/09, typical fees may rise by around three per cent each year). Funding from AHRC Research Council can be applied for with early application to the School by 12 April.

Entry Requirements
Second class Honours degree or higher or equivalent qualification/experience; English IELTS 6.0 or above or equivalent for overseas applicants. Practical and creative artistic ability, demonstrated in a portfolio will also be a determining factor for entry.
