Course Description
The four-year studentship consists of a one-year taught course including two short research projects with a Master's degree being awarded. This is followed by a three-year research project. There are many projects to choose from both for the first-year research placements and Students will have a dedicated mentor for the taught part of the course and will have both a chemistry and biology supervisor for the research elements. They will also be associated with a specific Oxford college and will have a college supervisor for more general supervision and pastoral care. The first-year is based mainly in the centre of Oxford on the South Parks Road science area where students will have dedicated desk space for the first-year in the Pharmacology Department. Term 1: Lectures, seminars & practical classes in pharmacology, heterocyclic chemistry and cancer biology. This will include a research project roadshow day when students can assess a wide variety of projects and get to know their potential supervisors. Term 2: Students choose two research projects for Term 3. Lectures, seminars and practical classes cover topics including Chemistry: drug design and pharmaceutical chemicals. Pharmacology: drug metabolism and disease models. Cancer biology will cover cell cycle and growth control as well as understanding existing anti-tumor therapy. There will also be a series of tutorials throughout the first two terms with leading cancer biologists and structural biologists outlining possible novel cancer targets and assessing appropriate drug design. Term 3: Two short research projects carried out between May and September, each within one of the host centres. Students choose DPhil research projects.

Successful candidates will need at least a 2:1 degree and the studentships provide for a stipend plus university & college fees at the home/EU student rate. Proficiency in English language at the higher level required.
