Course Description
THE PROGRAMME: This course aims to: - develop a vision together with the knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms by which the librarian or information manager fulfils the role of meeting the needs of users in the 21st century; - contribute to the development of independent and lifelong learners; allow its participants to enhance the management of traditional and electronic resources; - raise the professional status of all library staff; - create opportunities to progress to further higher level studies;- develop skills required to support a knowledge-based economy.The Certificate is awarded to those who satisfactorily complete two 30 point credit modules of study, namely; - The Library in its environment - Improving Library Practice This course is designed for library staff in the public and private sectors, in education including schools, colleges or universities and in specialist libraries or information units. It builds on the success of the Post Graduate Certificate in School Library Management, which received the Seal of Recognition from the Chartered Institute for Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). Discussions are taking place with CILIP for the new course to receive accreditation. Successful completion of the course is an end in itself but also provides access to a Post Graduate Diploma and a Masters qualification.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the University's general entrance requirements AND the entrance requirements for the course(s) of their choice. COURSE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants for entry will normally be staff working in a library environment who i. have attained a degree - either from a university in the UK, or the Republic of Ireland, or from any institution recognised by Senate for this purpose - or hold its professional equivalent; ii. be employed, or have an interest in, an information and library service environment . iii. The Course Committee is prepared to consider applications from non-graduate, experienced, persons working in a library, or information service environment, who can demonstrate or evidence graduate qualities as identified by the University of Ulster.
