Course Description
The Postgraduate Certificate is primarily aimed at new entrants to the profession seeking qualified medical illustrator status and wishing to undertake postgraduate level studies. The course is also offered to mature, practising medical illustrators who wish to undertake a postgraduate course related to their profession. The course is credit rated and may count towards further postgraduate study. Applicants who have considerable experience in medical illustration and an HND or C&GLI Advanced Certificate in a relevant subject, with or without a medical illustration qualification, will be considered via the APEL route. Overseas students who are practising clinical photographers or medical graphic designers will be considered on the basis of their home country's qualifications. If their first language in not English then they must have satisfied one of the School of Healthcare Studies' English language requirements no more than three years prior to commencing studies. The course is 14 months, part-time distance learning with two study periods in Cardiff. The course has two tracks, one for clinical photographers and the other for graphic designers in health. The course is delivered as five modules, two core, two discipline specific, and one specialist optional module. Students must gain 60 credits for the award of a postgraduate certificate. Each student to demonstrate application of theory to practice, and competence to practice must produce a Professional Portfolio. The course is accredited by both the BIPP and IMI. Course content Core modules (10 credits each)- Methods of inquiry; Professional practice of medical illustration. The discipline specific modules (10 credits each)- Clinical photography; Patient management in clinical photography; Designing for print; Designing for the screen. The specialist modules (20 credits), of which one must be chosen are- Ophthalmic imaging; Dental photography; Surgical video; Surgical photography.
