Course Description
The Secondary PGCE course (in addition to the subject enhancement) is designed to produce teachers who can teach across the age and ability range from 11-18 years, apart from Religious Education, which spans 11-16 years. The course has been developed in close collaboration with Partnership schools. There are about 90 Partnership Schools spread across Plymouth, Devon, Cornwall, with some schools in Dorset, Hampshire and London. The content of the course is made up of three components, each interlocking so that they make a coherent whole: General Professional Studies - This component underpins the whole course. It focuses on the three areas of the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status - Professional Values and Practice, Knowledge and Understanding, Teaching. In College GPS is taught to the whole cohort on a weekly basis, delivered through lectures or workshops, with trainees following through issues in cross subject seminars. The focus content is then carried through into subject studies. General Professional Studies is also delivered during school-based training; Applied Subject Studies - This component is about the application of the General Professional Studies course within a subject context. Trainees work with their College Tutor in discrete subject groups; The Practice of Education - This component is entirely school based and is, as its title suggests, is where educational 'theory' becomes transferred into practice, application and experience. The Practice of Education takes place in two schools - known as School A and School B. As trainees work in schools, observing, team teaching and solo teaching, they are trained and supported by a Subject Mentor a subject specialist. They will also receive training and support from a Professional Tutor. A senior member of staff is responsible for the initial teacher training within the school. Professional Tutors also deliver weekly General Professional Studies seminars. All courses are offered at postgraduate level.
