Course Description
This course is equivalent to a postgraduate level degree course. This programme is designed to provide a multifaceted approach to the conservation of historic buildings. The overall goal is to study the practical conservation of buildings within a wider historical context, in order to encourage a comprehensive and sensitive handling of issues relating to repair and reuse. Participants are encouraged to exchange work experience. The first year deals mainly with basic attitudes to conservation, decay of building materials, diagnosis and repair of building defects, and fundamental building crafts. Students are required to produce essays on set subjects as well as reports arising from the practical exercises. The scope of the second year is wider, examining the historic building in its setting and considering a number of associated issues, including historic interiors, rehabilitation and the introduction of services in the context of current philosophy and technology. They must complete a final thesis on a subject approved by the tutors for submission to the External Examiners.
