The course is taught at the Rural College on alternate teaching 'weekends' running from Fridays (15.00 - 21.00) to Saturday mornings (09.00 - 12.00). There are 12 teaching weekends in any academic year.
Course Description
The Post Graduate Diploma/ MSc In Sustainable Rural Development is offered on a part time basis to students who have an interest in rural affairs. The course is based on the widest possible definition of 'Rural' and covers areas such as environmental awareness, sustainability, economics, sociology and managing local development including community development practice.The course runs for three academic years on a part-time basis. It takes two years to acquire the Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Rural Development and a further year for the MSc. The Course is accredited by Queens University Belfast and is co-ordinated by the Rural College in association with The Gibson Institute for Land Food and Environment at QUB. The Course is funded to run at the Rural College by the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and will continue to run until 2010, subject to continued financial support from DARD. It is open to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and offers an APEL (Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning) route for students who successfully complete an APEL interview.Modules for study for the first two years of the course include:- Methods For Rural Development Practice And Research- State Policy And Rural Development- Rural Development Rhetoric And Reality- Managing Local Development- Economics and Politics of the Rural and Agricultural Environment- Learning to write (a module looking at production of a range of materials for a range of audiences - including academic publications, print media, policy documents etc.)The final year of the course is a research project which is completed by students in their own time, supervision is provided and a number of tutorials are organised for this year of study.
Course Fees
The course costs approximately £1,160 per year. In the past a number of bursaries have been provided by The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development . These bursaries are awarded on a discretionary basis and are only available to those who are residents of Northern Ireland for a period of three or more years.

Entry Requirements
Normally a primary degree is required prior to entry.Currently a limited number of APEL places are available. APEL (Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning) route for students who successfully complete an APEL interview and submit a piece of academic writing.
