The course examines the relationship between theories and practice of teaching English as a 2nd language; students learn about the latest developments in curriculum design and issues of sociolinguistics, ethnographic and social-physiological approaches to ESOL teaching and learning; they consider the wider issues that may have an impact on the teaching of ESOL, for example, the place of English in a changing global context; the effects of international political events; national trends; immigration policies and attitudes to integration, multiculturalism and cultural identification; students also look at issues relating to policies on further and adult education.
