Course Description
The programme equips you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to undertake careers in research in a variety of public, private and voluntary sector bodies, including doctoral research. This programme is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) under its 1+3 system (Master's plus PhD) for postgraduate studies. It focuses on the development of the skills necessary to undertake research in the social sciences in general, and planning, environment and housing in particular. You take compulsory modules in research methods and skills development (70 credits) which may include: introduction to information skills; thinking about research puzzles, paradoxes and problems; qualitative methodology in the social sciences; quantitative methodology in the social sciences; dissertation preparation. You then select optional modules (50 credits) from a comprehensive list which engages with a full spectrum of state-of-the-art planning, environment, housing and design research issues. You will be able to customise your portfolio of optional modules to fit with your own research interests. Typical optional modules include: planning law and government; land economics; urban design; cities and new technologies; environmental assessment and design; conservation of the historic environment; equal opportunities. You also complete a dissertation project (60 credits), which will enhance and demonstrate your research skills and training in planning and environmental research.

Entry Requirements
A minimum of a second-class Honours degree or equivalent in any subject. An upper-second-class Honours degree is preferred. Candidates with non-traditional qualifications and/or significant work experience in the field should contact the School for further advice. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), 577 (paper-based) or equivalent. Applicants whose IELTS score is between 6.0 and 6.5, or equivalent, at the time of application must complete a pre-sessional course at the University before the programme begins.
