Course Description
On the eve of the tercentenary year of Samuel Johnson's birth, we shall discuss his ground-breaking and highly influential Dictionary and consider: The place of the Dictionary in Johnson's life and career; The aims, purpose and influence of the Dictionary; How Johnson produced the Dictionary; Johnson's theory of language. The day-school will include a session at the John Rylands Library, Deansgate, where we shall examine copies of the first edition (1755) and the revised fourth edition (1773), together with related original materials. The 1773 edition is unique in containing manuscript marginalia by Johnson himself.
