About this course

The course ensures are provided with students with a knowledge and understanding of most fundamental laws and principles of physics, along with their application to diverse areas of the subject, particularly astronomy, together with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of a chosen area of specialisation and an awareness of current problems at the forefront of physics and astronomy; a practical understanding of a variety of experimental, mathematical and/or computational techniques applicable to current research within physics, and an understanding of how these techniques are used to advance knowledge in the subject.

Modules

Year 1: Core modules: foundations of physics 1 (40); discovery skills in physics (20); either single mathematics a (20) single mathematics b (20); or core mathematics a (20). Year 2: Core modules: foundations of physics 2 (20); mathematical methods in physics (20); thermal and condensed matter physics (20); stars and galaxies (20); laboratory skills and practice (20); computational physics and electronics (20). Year 3: Core modules: foundations of physics 3 (60); key skills a (20); astrophysics (20); either laboratory project (20); mathematical workshop (20); physics into schools (20); plus 1 20 credit module from the following in list a: condensed matter physics (20); astrophysics (20); theoretical physics (20). Year 4: Core modules: project (60; advanced astrophysics (20); modules to the value of 40 or 20 credits from list b: condensed matter physics (20); atomic and optical physics (20); astrophysics 4 (20); advanced theoretical physics (20); advanced condensed matter physics (20); advanced astrophysics (20); particle theory (20); theoretical physics 4 (20); theoretical astronomy (20).
