Course Description
Natural Sciences - Physics department research areas comprise: Astrophysics; Condensed Matter Theory; Experimental Solid State Physics; High Energy Physics; Photonics; Plasma Physics; Quantum Optics & Laser Science; Space & Atmospheric Physics; as well as Theoretical Physics.

Course Fees
Normally, £3168, except for Petroleum research areas: £9550. Fees are subject to change. To find out about up to date fee information please contact the University's Financial Guidance Unit. Funding (as applicable) is available from the following bodies: the Art & Humanities Research Council and the ESRC. Whilst the Medical Research Council; Biotechnology & Biological Research Council; the Natural Environment Research Council and; the EPSRC all make funding available, under their Doctoral Training Accounts.

Entry Requirements
The College looks for the Master's degree as a pre-requisite for research degree study, although exceptional candidates holding the Bachelor's degree only may be considered. A candidate might be required to satisfy qualifying conditions before being allowed to register. All research students are registered for the degree of MPhil in the first instance. After at least a year and after passing a transfer examination, a research student may be transferred to the degree of PhD, with the date of PhD registration being backdated to the date of initial registration for the MPhil.
