This degree course capitalizes on particular strengths within the philosophy department in the areas of philosophy of mind; epistemology and metaphysics; it has been put together with students in mind who are interested in a thorough grounding in these core philosophical areas (and their history) but it also reflects the fact that work in these areas is increasingly informed by a dialogue with work in psychology on the development of and mechanisms underlying (e.g. visual perception; conceptual thought; language and action).
Year 1: Issues in philosophy; starting logic; doing philosophy; knowledge and value; elements of scientific method; meaning and communication; introduction to psychology; option choices include: introduction to ancient philosophy or modules from other departments; year 2: history of modern philosophy; philosophy of thought and language 1; philosophy of mind 1; language and thought; developmental psychology; options from: aesthetics 1 and 2; ethics 1 and 2; philosophy of mind 1 and 2; philosophy of thought and language 1 and 2; epistemology and metaphysics; philosophy of logic; history of modern philosophy 1 and 2; post-Kantian continental philosophy 1 and 2; twentieth century continental philosophy 1 and 2; philosophy of religion; philosophy of science; philosophy of social science; consciousness and reality; Wittgenstein: philosophical investigations; year 3: a module in the history of philosophy; epistemology and metaphysics; consciousness and reality; philosophy of social science; plus options from year 2.
