Students following all geology and other geosciences degrees spend the 1st year learning the broad fundamentals of the geosciences; modules include dynamic earth, mathematical methods, field geology and structural geology; the year culminates with a 2-week field trip to spain; in the 2nd year students deepen their knowledge of the geosciences with further core modules in subjects such as sedimentary processes and climate and planetary studies; further field trips also take place in year 2, currently going to Sardinia and Wales; in the 3rd and 4th years students begin to specialise according to their chosen degree programme and participate in further field trips, core and optional modules, and conduct an independent field study and research project.
Modules include: Dynamic earth; field geology; geochemistry; internal processes, optical mineralogy and petrology; life and earth history; processes in geosciences; mathematical methods; structural geology including maps; sedimentary and surface processes; climate and planetary studies; earth resources; field geology; geochemistry; geophysics; igneous and metamorphic petrology; palaeontology; remote sensing and gis; sedimentary geology; structural geology.
