Course Qualification: PgDip in Petroleum Geochemistry
Course Venue: Newcastle University , Tyne And Wear, NE1 7RU
Awarding body: Newcastle University
Course Description
This programme aims to equip Earth science and chemistry graduates with the advanced skills, knowledge and understanding appropriate for a career in petroleum exploration and its related service industries. The programme is also very suitable for skilled graduates who want to become organic geochemists and pursue a career in academic research. For the MSc you complete a compulsory taught course (100 credits) which you must pass before starting a summer research project written up as a dissertation (80 credits). For the Diploma you take a shorter taught course (80 credits) and complete a 40-credit dissertation. The programme begins with modules that cover the deposition and analysis of source rocks and their associated organic matter. The processes by which petroleum is generated, migrates and accumulates are then explored, as are applications of geochemistry to reservoir assessment and production. Practical classes are given in essential organic geochemistry techniques and there is a module on the environmental impacts of petroleum. Following this, a more independent learning style is encouraged, with two modules based on the Wessex Basin petroleum province in southern England, followed by a final synthesis showing how geochemistry contributes to the analysis of petroleum systems. Dissertation projects are often laboratory based, but may involve desk studies or computer-based modelling of data. You might work within one of our established research groups, or in collaboration with an industrial partner.
