This course is designed to develop the skills of practitioners who are able to respond and be proactive in the complex assessment and management of patients undergoing surgery in a variety of settings; it promotes the development of expert perioperative practitioners with the ability to think critically utilising a relevant evidence base; the course is aimed at people who wish to develop their role within the surgical team, supporting the team in the delivery of high quality patient care; the course develops the students ability to respond and be proactive in the complex assessment and management of patients undergoing surgery in a variety of settings; students examine how to develop, enhance and improve the quality of perioperative management within the health care arena in order to provide improved care provision through the development of appropriate knowledge and skills; by the end of the course students are able to: Identify and appraise current literature in relation to perioperative care management and identify the appropriate use of literature in relation to perioperative management; identify and critically evaluate the diverse needs of the patient in the perioperative arena and the need to ensure appropriate channelling of resources, appreciating diversity in culture and lifestyle amongst patients in a variety of health care settings; act innovatively in relation to perioperative services and to provide leadership in their specific area of practice; deliver expert and creative approaches to perioperative management, educational enhancement and the development of strategies for evaluation and research in perioperative management; develop strategies and skills that enable practitioners to challenge hierarchical and organisational boundaries in the delivery of perioperative services; demonstrate critical, analytical, communication and decision making skills to undertake a strategic role within perioperative service delivery; develop collaborative, collegiate relationships within the perioperative management multidisciplinary team through the use of trust and interdependency within changing boundaries of practice delivery; function at a strategic level in order to implement advanced practice within a variety of perioperative management settings, recognising and adhering to the legal and ethical parameters that guide practice.
