This course offers a blend of practical skills and academic studies; it is designed for anyone wishing to follow a career in outdoor education.
Great emphasis is on individuals gaining national governing body qualifications alongside their academic studies; throughout the 2 years there are huge opportunities for skills development; residentials, expedition and trips, both in the United Kingdom and aboard, are an integral part of this course; within the 2 years, the student has the opportunity of achieving the following awards: Mountain Leader Training England (MLTE): Mountain Leader Training/Assessment; Mountain Leader Training England (MLTE): Single Pitch Award Training/Assessment; Royal Yachting Association (RYA): Powerboat Level Two, Safety Boat and Advanced; Royal Yachting Association (RYA): Day Skipper Theory and Practical/Coastal Skipper Theory and Practical; Royal Yachting Association (RYA): very high frequency/Radar/Sea Survival/Diesel awards; British Canoe Union (BCU)/ United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC): Level 1 - 3 coach (kayak, surf and canoe) Training/Assessment; British Canoe Union (BCU)/United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC): 1 -5 star Training/Assessment (inland); British Canoe Union (BCU)/ United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC): 4 star (surf and sea). The modules studied may include: Year 1: Business start-up; sports coaching; water based skills; health and fitness; health in the community; land based skills; anatomy and physiology; exercise science; professional development and professional placement. Year 2: equipment and facilities management; corporate leadership and development; activity management; special project; water and land based leadership; sports and community development; biomechanics; psychology.
