As well as learning about astronomical theory, students have hands on experience in observational astronomy and training in astrophysical techniques; they are also expected to participate in field schools in Poland, La Palma, Andalusia and other overseas locations; there are a number of telescopes for student use, students are trained in the use of small telescopes and digital photography alongside CCD imaging, as well as use of the 2, 2-metre Faulkes telescopes in Australia and Hawaii; students gain a sound knowledge of astronomy and space studies, strengthened by a critical understanding of science; they develop skills that are valuable in many engaging careers, including journalism, teaching, publishing and research.
