Year 1: The focus is on the promotion of health; students are introduced to nursing and to a range of subjects that underpin nursing, including sociology, behavioural sciences, biological sciences and research; students experience health care in the community and in clinical practice, initially as an observer, with the opportunity to develop essential nursing skills. Year 2: The focus is on maintaining health; studies include further modules in nursing and related sciences; after 18 months, students move into the branch programmes of adult, child or mental health; students now study modules that focus on their chosen branch, and some shared modules; students continue to develop their nursing care skills in a range of settings, acting as a supervised participant in nursing care. Year 3: Students develop skills in the management and evaluation of nursing care, and study modules on a breadth of material related to the chosen branch, and share modules with all nursing students; students start their research project and undergo a wide range of clinical experience in hospital and community settings across Nottingham; students also have the opportunity to study nursing overseas, or in alternative UK settings, as an elective placement. Year 4: Students study nursing in high dependency and specialist areas, and in preparation for qualification; modules support their learning, and help students to undertake and write up their dissertation; by the end of the year, students are working as an assistant to the registered nurse, ready to take on the role of a qualified nurse after graduation.
