Year 1: Common foundation programme is 50/50 theory and practice and aims to provide a good foundation in nursing. Year 2: Branch programme in mental health nursing also consists of 50/50 theory and practice; students' with 55% in the theoretical modules or above move onto the Honours degree, while those with less than that complete the non-Honours degree; both programmes provide a solid preparation for practice as a registered nurse who is able to provide high quality care for those with mental health problems; the Honours degree includes more study at level 3 and has a stronger focus on research; theoretical study follows 6 themes: reflective and proficient practice; theoretical and professional issues; communication teaching and learning; leadership and management; health and its determinants; research and evidence-informed practice; clinical practice enables students to develop their knowledge and abilities in the range of areas in which mental health nurses work: acute mental health nursing; community mental health nursing; working with the elderly with mental health problems; specialist nursing contexts (including a focus on mental health promotion); the programme ends with a 18-week placement, 9 weeks in the community setting and 9 weeks in a hospital mental health unit.
