Learners taking this course must be working in a senior or supervisory role in a childcare setting. The work environment must be a nursery, pre-school, childminder, and all schools. Learners must be in employment for at least 6 months, and have the opportunity for work-based assessment. The course involves completing 9 units that relate to various areas of childcare. There are 5 core units, which all students must complete, and 4 option units relating to your area of expertise. The core unit titles are: Develop positive relationships Develop and maintain a healthy, safe and secure environment for children Promote children s development Reflect on and develop good practice Protect and promote children s rights The qualification is an NVQ or National Vocational Qualification. To gain the qualification, learners will be required to be assessed by a qualified assessor, and will be asked to produce a portfolio of evidence to show that they meet the required standard. Learners must be able to demonstrate their knowledge and practice. Attendance at college is on a part-time basis; learners are expected to attend 80% of the programme. Learning is achieved through a variety of methods: attending workshops, sharing experiences, views and ideas with other learners, professional discussion, with feedback and review from an assessor. Learners will be shown how to gather evidence to meet the National Occupational Standards, in order to gain their NVQ in Children s Learning, Care & Development. Foundation Degree in Working with Children, then Early Years Professional Status (EYPS).
