The course is for students interested in a career in the business sector of the dynamic and rapidly expanding creative industries; students learn the fundamentals of how the media industry operates, how to develop and grow ideas and how to sell those ideas locally, nationally and globally; learners gain an understanding of business and financial concepts; in particular, how they are applied in the context of the music and creative industries; in addition to building understanding of the workings of this sector, there is a practical component to the course, which gives an insight into the development and use of operations tools and information technology applications for business; students gain the skills to become business savvy in an area which is constantly changing, evolving and requires an entrepreneurial mind; a series of seminars from the music and creative industries provides a current overview of the industries which allows students to apply a more independent understanding, analysis, evaluation and application to academic activity; regular industry networking events provides opportunities to swap business cards and to pitch to future potential employers; during the 3rd year students undertake a work placement in a specialist area in a real working environment related to the chosen pathway, which allows learners to put the learnt skills into practice; the course covers areas which are prevalent in the music and creative areas including, e-business, public relations and marketing, finance for business, people management, organisation strategy and planning, event management and group pitching; practical event management is performed by a team of students in a joint venture programme with Bolton council to hold a music and creative arts festival; the team plans, markets and runs the event, the aim of which is to bring the community of Bolton together for a day of multicultural music, arts, fashion and family entertainment.
Level 1: Know the music, creative and digital industries (double module); professional development for the creative industries; introduction to musicology; group project and pitching; principles of marketing for the music and creative industries. Level 2: IPR law for music, creative and digital industries; online media creation and marketing; entrepreneurship; live event venue evaluation; work-based learning (double module). Level 3: Advanced musicology; people and project management; music and creative industries company structures; work-based learning; project (double module) or team project for the creative Industries (double module).
