Course Description
London has a wealth of museums and art galleries; many of them purpose-built , some adapted from great houses or other power-generating edifices (Wallace Collection, Imperial War Museum, Tate Modern). This course will consider the emergence and evolution of the museum/gallery as a building-type, and look at the architectural treatments, both classical and anti-classical, functional and dysfunctional, that have been deployed. It will offer a mix of historical and contextual classes, in which students will be introduced to recent work in Museology as well as to historical debates over the role of culture and access to truth and beauty in a democratizing nation state. There will also be plenty of site visits; for example to Sir John Soane's Museum, The Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Horniman Museum, as well as the National Gallery and two Tates.

Courses are designed for both students with a keen interest but no art historical qualifications, and those with an art history background.
