Course Description
This programme responds to a growing skills shortage in industry for engineers with a high level of training in multimedia technologies, and in particular to support broadcast, entertainment, surveillance, gaming, internet, communications and consumer industries. The MSc is intended both for graduates in a related discipline, who wish to enhance and specialise their skills in the area, and for industrialists with some experience of working with signal processing, who wish to obtain a formal qualification. The MSc will provide core knowledge of multimedia theory and its implementation, in particular: Digital signal processing and multimedia communications Current digital multimedia technologies. The convergence of different media, computer and communications and the social significance of this convergence. This will equip you for a career in multimedia related fields. Upon completion of the MSc Multimedia Systems Technology, you will have gained advanced skills which will allow you to: Construct software to process and deliver multimedia information through a number of different channels; Construct software to analyse, process, and retrieve multimedia information; Appreciate the social significance of multimedia information provision; Appreciate the commercial significance of multimedia communication; Understand a variety of multimedia systems.

Assessment method
Students are required to take written examinations in May/June. To obtain an MSc, you must gain passes in six of the eight modules taken. The pass mark is 50 per cent for individual modules, but compensation is allowed for failure of up to two modules, provided the mark in the module is not less than 30 per cent. The MSc requires that a satisfactory project should be completed in addition to passing the written examinations. A distinction is awarded when both the project and the overall average (exams eight units and project four units) is 70 per cent or above. Students who do not pass the written examinations are only allowed to attempt the project after passing resit examinations the following May.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a first or upper-second class degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline. Applicants with unrelated degrees will be considered if there is evidence of significant relevant industrial experience. Applicants with lower-second class degrees may be considered if the undergraduate degree specialised in the relevant subjects.
