This programme enables students to create highly detailed and accurate models which are suitable for a range of disciplines, from concept cars for the automotive industry to scale models used by architects and movie miniatures in films; students learn traditional techniques in the machine shop and later use cutting edge technologies, which include computer generated imagery and computer-aided modeling to produce highly finished, professional-quality models; in year 1, students gain a strong grounding in the craft practices and workshop skills used for a range of professional areas, working on everything from highly accurate architectural models to the more imaginative, inventive type of projects required by special and character-effects designers for film and television; in year 2, students work on a series of 1-week turbo projects taught by visiting industry professionals; students may also spend up to 4 months on a professional work placement; in the final year, students write a degree essay and their final major project is a chance to demonstrate their professional ability in their chosen specialist area; at the end of the year students produce business cards, a CV and a professional portfolio to help launch their career.
