Year 1: Students begin to learn psychomotor skills needed to assess the needs of mother and child and are able to discuss the use of theory in practice; more complex health issues affecting family life and childbearing are introduced and analysed and students begin to examine critically the nature of illness and interruptions to health. Year 2: 2 modules; opportunity to further develop analytical skills by exploring the different ways in which pregnancy and childbirth changes peoples lives; practice placements. Year 3: Students begin to develop the skills needed for effective management and leadership, and are given further opportunities to develop their teaching skills. Year 4 (optional): This period is for individual study following professional registration; students undertake an in-depth systematic enquiry into aspects of the midwife's role or practice; dissertation; requires a separate registration towards the end of the diploma programme and is subject to a course fee.
