Students may register in either the School of Biology and Biochemistry (UCAS C500) or the School of Agriculture and Food Science (UCAS C510). The school from which they graduate is determined by the choice of modules in the final year of the course.
Preliminary year (Level 0): 6 modules are taken, including 2 in biology and chemistry, plus 2 normally from: computer science; geography; geology; pure mathematics; physics.
Level 1: Modules cover a wide range of biological subjects: micro-organisms; genetics and molecular biology; biochemistry plus 1 chemistry module.
Level 2: Genetics and physiology of viruses; bacteria and fungi; diseases of animals and plants; ecological, environmental and industrial aspects of microbiology.
Level 3: Research project; modules are selected from: food microbiology and technology; genetic manipulation and bacterial genetics; plant-microbial interactions; the immune system; infections of human and animals; virology.
