Premedical course: Biology; chemistry; physics; introduction to medical subjects. Phase 1 (Year 1): Deals mainly with normal structure, function and behaviour; it is biased towards the basic medical sciences but their clinical relevance is emphasised and there are opportunities for students to study clinical applications during special study modules. Self-directed learning is a well-established component of phase 1 and this will be extended. Phase 2 (Years 2 & 3): Deals with abnormal structure, function and behaviour with a problem-based approach to learning; in this phase learning takes the form of a systematic study of clinical medicine, including concepts of health promotion and disease prevention; the course is fully integrated and works through the systems of the body ensuring that, by the end of phase 2, students have an adequate theoretical basis on which to proceed to the 3rd phase of the course. Phase 3 (Years 4 & 5): Deals with the clinical application of the skills and knowledge students acquired earlier in the course and employs self-directed learning as the major educational strategy.
