The proposed project must be in an area relevant to medical practice; all postgraduate research students in the College are appointed an adviser within the first 3 months of study; the adviser is someone who is not directly involved in the research project but should know enough about the topic area to be able to follow the progress of the MD; advisers are there to give independent advice to the student; to ensure �fair play� in assessments; offer general academic advice; mediate if there is conflict between, for example, the student and supervisor(s).
