The course focuses on an understanding of the medical sciences and the disease processes that underpin medicine; the foundations of clinical method and communication skills are explored with an introduction to clinical practice and patient care; the systems-based course then commences with the study of 2 major systems, the respiratory and the cardiovascular systems.
Phase 1 (Year 1): Concentrates mainly on the basic medical sciences: anatomy; biochemistry; genetics; pharmacology; physiology; course on cells and molecules and tissues and organs followed by introductions to normal structure and function in each of the bodily systems, e.g. the alimentary and cardiovascular systems. Throughout these courses the clinical relevance of the material being covered will be stressed. There is also a parallel community-based course centred on a network of local general practices; this integrates elements of general practice, public health, mental health, environmental and occupational health, care of the elderly, and child health, and provides an opportunity for students to learn about the effect of social, economic and environmental factors on humans, and to learn and practise communication skills and some basic clinical skills. Additional basic computing skills course. Phase 2 (Year 2 and 2/3 of year 3): Introduction to diseases and their general effects on patients, along with their investigation and the basic principles of management. Following a general introduction to the principles of disease involving elements of subjects such as pathology, microbiology, genetics and pharmacology, students undertake a 2nd systems-based course; they also learn about multi-system topics such as child health, medicine and the law, anaesthetics, etc, and are introduced to the principles of questioning and examining patients (clinical method). The community-based course continues during this phase, concentrating on aspects of disease, disability and rehabilitation within the community setting. Phase 3 (remainder of 3rd year and year 4): This consists largely of a series of 9 5-week long specialist ward, clinic or general practice-based clinical rotations, which will be partly organised by body systems (e.g. cardiological medicine and cardiac and vascular surgery) and partly by multi-system disciplines (e.g. child health and general practice); there is also a 4-week special study module focusing on ethical issues. Phase 4 (Year 5): 3 7-week clinical blocks (in medicine, surgery and community), with a choice of speciality (e.g. medical: adult medicine, paediactrics, medicine for the elderly; surgical: general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthetics and intensive care); 1 7-week project-based elective, frequently undertaken abroad; and 1 8-week paramedical block, which allows students to study a topic outside a traditional medical curriculum.
