The course has been designed with the General Medical Council and students learn and work with expert clinicians in a range of disciplines; students study scenarios and real clinical problems from real patients; students solve these problems through group and individual work and learn how to apply acquired medical knowledge to practical situations; this is the essence of problem based learning which is fundamental to the course; students learn how research underpins innovation in medicine, and develop their communication skills.
Year 1: Basic mathematics I; further biology; introduction to issues in healthcare; introductory biology; introductory chemistry. Year 2: Fitness to practice; integrative period; locomotion; the human lifecycle - a holistic approach. Year 3: Blood and skin; circulation; fitness to practice; respiration. Year 4: Digestion/nutrition; fitness to practice; homeostatis and hormones; integrative period; the senses. Year 5: Elective; fitness to practice; growth and development; integrative period; reproduction. Year 6: Emergency care; final integrative period; Mb/bs: introduction to year 6; preparation for F1; the mind.
