This course is suitable for hospital doctors or GPs who want to develop their leadership and management skills and make a difference in their practice; it has been designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge of an internationally recognised qualification; doctors take 3 core modules which are based on the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF) and are able to choose 3 option modules from: managing teams; managing finance; managing quality and effectiveness; project management; change and organisation development; culture; commissioning in health and social care; in years 1 and 2 formal attendance requires around 10 days each academic year delivered as full day workshops; year 1 addresses operational management from a medical perspective and year 2 covers more strategic elements of medical leadership; year 3 is focused on an e-learning research methods module and a dissertation supervised by an academic tutor; the course focuses on work-based learning modules that use a number of small action learning sets to help students progress; through action learning sets they apply key theoretical concepts to work-based issues or problems and look for more effective medical management and quality improvement for patient care; independent study and work-based learning comprise the majority of the study time.
