The course gives grounding in film and television digital production techniques, screenwriting and theoretical and critical study; the programme helps students to challenge, question, explore and extend what is possible in moving image media; as learners progress through the degree, a choice from a wide range of specialist modules is made that allows students to delve more deeply into a particular areas of interest; this course is for students that aim to work in the film and television industries; combining theory, screenwriting, digital film production and professional development, it puts the script at the heart of production, enabling students to develop skills in screenwriting and digital filmmaking; replicating industry working practices, in production modules students make digital films based on the best screenplays written in the screenwriting modules; students undertake a placement within the industry during the course; students learn to communicate with a range of audiences and to site work within a critical understanding of media institutions and practices; the 1st half of the course develops good basic screenwriting and digital film making skills, knowledge of the UK film and television industry, and an understanding of professional relationships; learners consider the ways in which moving image texts create and communicate meaning, and explore key ideas about social and political functions of moving image entertainment; in the 2nd half of the course, learners can continue to deepen skills and knowledge in all 3 disciplines (screenwriting, digital filmmaking and film/media studies) or decide to specialise in just 1; most students focus on developing professional skills and competences in one specialism.
From semester 2, level 2, students choose 3 modules each semester from: Writing short films; writing television drama series; screenwriting workshop; directing actors for digital film; documentary practice; European cinema; experimental film; British cinema; students develop a 3rd year dissertation project, it can be a digital film, a feature length screenplay or an extended essay based on theoretical/contextual research. Level 1: Practical modules: Photography and video; screenwriting in context; media production; introduction to screenwriting; theoretical modules: Reading the screen; introduction to media and cultural theory. Levels 2 and 3: In the 1st semester of level 2, students continue to study 2 practical modules (1 screenwriting, 1 digital film production) and 1 theoretical module: Narrative and audiences; an appropriate work placement at level 3 is compulsory.
