Course Description
Materials science and engineering involves the study of all materials that are of use, or potential use, in engineering, scientific or medical applications. This means understanding the electronic, atomic and molecular configurations, and the crystal and grain structures of materials. This information is essential for understanding and predicting properties such as mechanical strength and toughness, chemical stability and the electrical, magnetic and optical characteristics of the final product. The subject is exceptionally broad. They cover the production, structure and properties of engineering materials.

Assessment method
Your degree classification will be awarded on a combination of written examinations and continuous assessment of coursework. In the first two years, some written examinations are taken during the session and some at the end of the session. In the third year of the MEng and in the final year of the BEng courses, all the written examinations are at the beginning of the summer term. The written examinations for the final year of the MEng courses take place during the spring and summer terms. Coursework marks are awarded on a wide range of activities, including laboratory and project reports. In the final year there is a strong emphasis on individual project work. On the four-year BEng and MEng courses, the examiners will also take account of the report written on the project work carried out during the industrial placement.
