Course Description
This programme is for those who wish to focus on how engineers design and manufacture products with different materials. You will investigate the principles of selecting a particular material for a product and how different materials present specific constraints and opportunities to the designer. You will also come to grips with the way manufacturing processes have an important influence on a product's design. The fascinating relationships and interplay between these 3 aspects - materials, design and manufacture - are at the heart of the programme. The early modules you will study are much the same as the Materials Science and Engineering programme (F200/J200), with the addition of the Mechanics of Machines and the Mechanics of Solids. This leads on to modules in Dynamics, Control, Product Design and Teamwork, Engineering Systems and the Mechanics of Solids. In year 3, you undertake a materials project and take modules on subjects such as Conceptual Design and Total Quality Management, with options from Smart Materials, Surface Engineering and Biomaterials for Engineers.
