Year 1: Marine plants and animals; elements of marine ecology; introduction to chemical oceanography; physical oceanography 1; cellular and genetic mechanisms; Earth and ocean system; key skills and fieldwork; quantitative Earth and ocean science or introduction to mathematical methods. Year 2: Marine vertebrates; phytoplankton and primary production; ecological processes of the marine benthos; estuaries; quantitative methods for biological and environmental science; practical techniques and key skills for oceanography; plus selection from: animal behaviour; biological and chemical aspects of environmental pollution; freshwater systems; sedimentary systems and processes; geochemistry. Year 3: Environmental physiology of marine organisms; zooplankton ecology and processes; inshore fisheries and aquaculture; marine molecular biology; applied oceanography and fieldwork; oceanography research training; plus selection from: behavioural ecology or oceanography from space; students have the opportunity to enrol in a collaborating department in another university (currently the University of North Carolina, Wilmington) to take a variety of advanced modules over 1 or 2 semesters. Year 4: Deep sea ecology; contemporary topics in marine biological science; tropical biology (incorporating fieldcourse to Bermuda); reproduction in marine animals; advanced research project; plus selection from: structure and dynamics of marine communities or ecological modelling.
