The main strength of LHS is its close links with some of the best hospitality businesses in the UK. Students can work part time with Four Seasons Hotels during their first year in the banqueting department, where as well as earning money, they also get valuable working experience in a five star hotel. Hotels will also contact the college with regular part-time work for students where they work in restaurants, room service, reservations and in human resources.
Our second year work placement is usually held in one of London's five or four star hotels in Front Office or Food and Beverage, but we also have students working in five star hotels in Scotland, Egypt, Thailand and China.
Our courses focus on business management rather than operations and although anyone who works in the hotel business has to start with operations, we believe that a successful management career depends upon having the skills with technology and marketing and people management and so we focus there.
Our courses are modular and students may join the Higher National Diploma at the start of any monthly unit. They then continue on for 12 monthly units producing an assignment for each unit which is assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction. On completion of the first years’ 12 units, LHS works with the student to arrange a paid work placement in a London hotel. We work exclusively with the five and four star hotels, and student placements are usually arranged in Front Office or Food and Beverage.
On completion of the work placement the student has a final one month summative course before completing their HND course. On qualification students are frequently offered full-time employment with the hotel they did their placement in. Those who wish to, usually take up the offer as it usually means a promotion. Alternatively students can return to LHS for a final year BA degree top-up, in association with Derby University, starting in either September or January where they will again study in a modular way with a further six course units.
