Located in Central London, The London College Of Massage was established in 1987 with an aim to make massage widely available to all, improve the standard of training throughout the country and position it as a necessary integrated therapy within the world of orthodox medicine.
We have seen the power of touch transform the lives of many. Massage brings a deep sense of peace through profound relaxation of mind and body and to experience this on an individual level is to begin to create it in the world around you. In this way we intend the study and practice of massage to enhance the quality of life for all.
The London College Of Massage is affiliated to the following organisations:
British Massage Therapy Council
The BMTC is an organisation representing massage schools and organisations at all levels with other professional organisations and the Government. It has established a core curriculum for massage training to ensure that high standards of practice are taught and is at the forefront of self-regulation for the industry.
British Complementary Medicine Association
The BCMA a major complementary medicine, multi-therapy umbrella body in the UK, representing some 45 single therapy organisations and some 18 independent schools. Through this structure it speaks for practitioners of 16 different therapies. The BCMA aims to harmonise therapies and provide a central information point for the public. It is committed to raising standards in training and practice.
Institute for Complementary Medicine
The ICM provides information on complementary medicine, campaigns and researches and can give advice on trainings. There is a network of public information points around the country run by people who are not practitioners (so they can be independent). The Institute runs a referral service for the general public to complementary practitioners, library, Supporters Club, Newsletter and Scientific Journal.
Status of Massage in the UK Today
At present massage therapy comes under the auspices of common law and as a massage therapist you are a 'service provider' under the Goods and Services Act 1982. There is no standard qualification, examining board or register that is regulated by the government education department, all training is operated in the private sector by individuals or private limited companies. We are in the process of self regulation as an industry and hope that in time, this will come into force making it clearer for the general public and medical practitioners to recognise a well trained and knowledgeable therapist. The London College Of Massage is at the forefront of the self regulation process and keeps abreast of the constant development in this field.
