The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is the first such institution in the world, founded in 1898 and we have been at the forefront of tropical medicine research and education for over one hundred years. Our first Professor of Tropical Medicine, Professor Ross, was the first British recipient of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1902 and we have continued in our mission to combat disease throughout the world.
Africa has been the setting for many of LSTM’s outstanding achievements. We have capacity building education partnerships throughout Africa and the Middle East and through the years, LSTM students and staff have disseminated our work throughout the world.
Our academic staff are internationally respected experts in their fields of research, giving our students a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw on. Our reputation in this niche field of tropical medicine provides an international benchmark for excellence and we attract the highest calibre of professionals and students alike. Our alumni have gone on to important positions in-country and with organisations such as the WHO, this international network provides an excellent selection to our international student projects.
