There is renewed interest in life drawing, and admission tutors are always interested in future students who have good drawing skills before they embark on a university course. Therefore, a good drawing portfolio is essential when making an application. This course is suited to students with an interest in fine art, design or fashion who have some experience of drawing who wish to further develop their skills. On the course you will start with the nude and progress to the clothed model. You will engage in a number of quick exercises to get you going before completing more rendered work. You will explore tonal drawings, the qualities of colour, line, volume, form and drawing drapery (clothes). You will initially work with graphite and charcoal, moving on to colour pastels, acrylics and inks as your skills develop. The practical drawing activities are supported by demonstrations from the tutor, group critiques and one-to-one advice. Practical exercises will also be accompanied by references to classical and contemporary figurative artists. This course is different from others in that you will work from, and exploring the relationship between, both the nude and clothed figure, depicting the individual as a full length portrait. You will be working with a variety of models and produce a large number of drawings and sketches. By the end of the course you will have a strong portfolio and a new confidence in your drawing abilities.
