This course provides academic grounding for the profession of learning technologist; it is distinctive in its twin focus on the computer science and the learning theory that together underpin the optimal use of learning technologies; it is aimed at people from either a computing or education background, and also those already working in the learning technologies area; students gain specialist knowledge of designing, developing and evaluating learning systems; they develop a sound foundation for entry to a career in learning technologies, or to a research degree in the subject.
There are 2 routes through the programme; route A is appropriate for those without significant prior experience of computing, and route B for those with significant prior experience of computing, including prior experience with using an object-oriented programming language; students choose from a range of specialist subjects, such as: learning and teaching with technology; pedagogy and technology; adaptive learning environments; technologies for mobile and ubiquitous learning; intelligent technologies; introduction to software development; research methods in technologies for learning; plus individual project; this may be either an implementation project, aiming to design, develop and evaluate a substantial software system targeted at a specific learning setting, or a research dissertation, aiming to conduct a piece of social science or education research into a problem in the use of digital technologies for teaching and learning.
