The course aims to make graduates highly proficient linguists, capable of working in a wide range of challenging careers at an international level; there is an emphasis on choice, reflected in the broad range of courses (including linguistic studies, film and television studies, social and political studies, and literary studies); the year abroad provides an opportunity to improve linguistic and cultural proficiency in a chosen language and to demonstrate an ability to work independently over a sustained period; the administrative organisation of the year abroad is carried out by the international exchange administrator, and students are assigned a supervisor who looks after learners during the year.

Year 2: Language 2; language 1; cultures of globalisation; international political analysis; English legal system I; company law; Britain and the evolving EU; managing research and learning; globalisation (economics, politics, culture and the nation state); gender, race and nation in modern Latin America; language and society in the German-speaking world; theories of international relations; political theory A; English legal system II; immigration, race and ethnicity in France; French post-war thought; media perspectives on post-1968 Germany; metropolitan cultures (Vienna and Berlin); ethnography for language learners; teaching English as a 2nd/foreign language; culture and society in Portugal and Brazil; myths and realities of contemporary Spain. Year 3: Year abroad. Year 4: Language 2; language 1; final-year modern languages dissertation; an ambivalent asylum (the histories and memories of refugees of early 20th-century France); discourses of dentity (a study of identity formation in border communities in the contemporary and former Germany/ies); language teaching theory and practice; globalisation and world politics; cultural identity in the Portuguese speaking world; comparative sociology; comparative social policy; exiles, migrants and citizens (narrating and documenting displacement in contemporary Spain); minorities and migrants (exploring multicultural Germany); language and the city; issues in 3rd world politics; globalisation and world politics.
