The course examines one of the principal types of Western art from its origins in classical antiquity to the 20th century. We shall study the idealized landscapes confined to the background of religious and mythological narratives by Claude and Poussin, the naturalistic landscapes of 17th Dutch painters and the changes brought by artists such as Constable, Turner and Impressionist masters. Reasons for the continuing popularity of the genre will be discussed together with the different techniques used through the centuries.
