Law, economics, and their relationship to the built and natural environment are at the heart of this course, but the principles of business regulation, the financial aspects of real estate and matters of international development are other areas of focus.
Year 1: Students acquire a thorough grounding in the core disciplines of law and economics and are introduced to the multidisciplinary nature of the degree through 4 compulsory papers on: economics; the public sector: institutional and legal frameworks; quantitative methods for land economy; land economy, development and sustainability; during their 1st year students develop a sound numerical base, computer literacy, and skills in oral presentation and report preparation. Year 2: Students take 5 papers, including at least 1 paper from a choice of 2 on law; students then select their other 4 papers from a choice of 6; current options include: environmental economics; finance and investment; the built environment; land and urban economics; law of real property. Year 3: Student are required to take 4 papers and submit a dissertation; the 4 papers are chosen from a wide range of options, which currently includes: law and economics; landlord and tenant law; planning policy and practice; land, food and ecosystem services; land policy and development economics; and advanced techniques in finance and investment for real estate; students also write a 10,000 word dissertation on any aspect of the Department's work.
