Journalism and News Media Nonfiction: feature writing; travel, tourism and the media; policing culture, policing the nation; career preparation (journalism); work placement; popular journalism and tabloid culture; producing and debating journalism; reporting Britain; photography and the real; politics and the media; introduction to radio; journalism then and now; issues in journalism: ethics and law; magazine journalism; writing sport; aspects of journalism then and now; feature writing 2; east and west: terror, power and new journalism; north and south: reporting Africa; investigative journalism; analysing multimedia journalism; practising multimedia journalism; journalism assignment; journalism and news media dissertation; digital photography workshop; questioning citizenship. English Language and Lingusitics Year 1: Introduction to linguistics (sounds and structures of language); language, society and power (wide range of socio-linguistics issues); hands-on language (practical project involving collection and analysis of data); meaning in language (how words make sense). Years 2-3: Courses give both broad and detailed knowledge of significant areas of language studies, training students in language analysis and in critical evaluation of a range of theories relating to the field. Core courses include: history of the English language; English in its social context; discourse and conversation analysis; phonetics and phonology. Topic courses focus on specialised areas of language study, including: language acquisition; language in the media; language and gender; conversational narrative; pidgins and Creoles; morphology and psycholinguistics.
