The course: gives students a detailed understanding of special educational needs in relation to children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and the relevant current legislation; enhances their knowledge of how children develop speech, language, literacy and numeracy; develops their awareness of the social and emotional development and needs of children with SLCN; provides information about assessment processes and intervention procedures for children with SLCN.
Required: Concepts and contexts of special educational needs; evidence based practice in health and education; language, learning and development; social and emotional development in children with SLCN; dissertation on joint professional practice; optional module examples: clinical management; identity, inclusion and living with disability; leadership and management in special education; learning disabilities; literacy development; reading and spelling difficulties; oral and written language development and difficulties; research design and statistics.
