This course offers an innovative, intellectually-challenging and integrated approach to international relations, and issues and perspectives on contemporary political and social theory; students consider various aspects of international order and politics, including the dynamics of international social and political power relationships as well as the role of violence, peace and war in the rise of the modern state, and competing perspectives on the human sciences; these topics are studied comparatively in relation to governmental, political and social processes, and in the contexts of various historical continuities, discontinuities and contrasts.
Core modules: dissertation and research methods; human sciences: perspectives and methods; international relations theory 1: theoretical perspectives; either democracy: global perspectives or the state, politics and violence; 3 optional modules from: controversies in United States foreign policies and processes; democracy and Islam; environmental and urban governance: international perspectives; governance of the European Union; international humanitarian law; international security; introduction to contemporary Chinese societies and cultures; Latin America and globalisation; modernity, post-modernity and the Islamic perspective; perspectives on post-Cold War Chinese foreign policy; politics, public life and the media; problems and perspectives in cultural studies; the European Union as an international actor; 1 of the options may be an approved free choice module hosted by another Master's course.
